Novotel hotels are always positioned as modern, uncomplicated and unadorned. The Novotel Surabaya intended to display a more distinctive identity, yet localised to the country. Taking Indonesia’s most famous handicraft, the batik Jawa is used as the key highlight to this hotel.
Deliberately stripping away the intricacies of the batik patterns, we have opted to use only the diagonal lines of the prominent “parang motif”, further softening these hard lines with the kawung motif that resembles a simplified butterfly shape.
Teal and lemon yellow colours are used as accent colours against a very neutral and natural palette of washed-white oak and light beige compressed stones. This resulted in a younger, more refreshed business hotel yet rich in traditions and cultural elements.
